The hunter waited, and the hunter watched. The forest spoke to him, the leaves alive but wilting as Bieggolman breathed across the lands.

Be careful, the trees rustled. Wait. It is restless.

Behind him, the tribe began the chant. Part ceremony, part prayer, part wake-up call for the slumbering beast.

It didn’t take long for the creature to roar its displeasure, and as the sound reverberated off the walls of the cave, the hunter sucked in a deep breath. Fear clotted the back of his throat and turned his palms damp, but fear was for the summer, and for those outside. It had no place in the hunter’s heart. He’d been chosen. The Noaidi’s moonlit eyes had narrowed in on him as his drumbeat had come to a stop.

Never once had the hunter dared to hope to be the focus of the Noaidi’s full attention, let alone be chosen as the warrior favoured by the gods. It was an honour that the hunter would never understand and one he’d spend the rest of his life striving to be worthy of.

Fear was for those who’d never felt the weight of star-bright eyes on them, and fear was for those who didn’t ache and long to touch midnight hair and moonlight skin.

As he gripped his spear and stood his ground, and as the bear reared up in rage, the hunter thought that his heart now solely beat for the sound of the Noaidi’s drum.

It wasn’t until later, when the hunter presented the spoils of hide and bone and tooth to the Noaidi—later when their fingers had brushed over a cleaned claw—that he knew he’d been wrong.

It wasn’t the drum that his heart beat for; it was for the man himself.
